Feature Friday: Melanie

Today we are featuring the ESG Program Director, Melanie:

What is your favourite ocean animal?

Seagulls, they look like dolphins in the air

If you were a superhero, what would you want your super power to be?

Basic human social skills.

What is one thing you take away from your time at ESG?

The insights that the kids and teens have to the stories. I appreciate how they pay attention and notice God’s presence in the world and in their stories.

Feature Friday: Nola

We’re starting off our 2022/23 Feature Fridays with a spotlight on Nola, who has recently rejoined the ESG team as an adult after participating as a youth for several years. Welcome back Nola!

What is your favourite ocean animal?

The leafy sea dragon [a seahorse] because the camouflage seems supernatural or fantastic, but it actually exists!

If you were a superhero, what would you want your super power to be?

Teleportation, it’s practical.

What is one thing you take away from your time at ESG?

It’s just fun. It’s why I came back too. ESG is a fun, playful place.

If you could play any fictional character, who would you choose and why?

I would want to play Hermione from Harry Potter because she’s really smart.

Five years

What’s your favourite thing about ESG (other than snacks!)?

The theatre games – you do a lot of movement and I love the questions.

What has been your favourite ESG performance?

Probably this one! There are so many different elements [We’ll leave it at that, since we don’t want to spoil it for any of our readers!]

If you could play any fictional character, who would you choose and why?

Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) in Hamilton, because he’s awesome.

This week we spoke with: Rosemary

How long have you been involved in ESG?

I was around at the beginning, but I haven’t been involved every single year. I’d hav to look back. I’m pretty sure it was before 2001.

What’s your favourite thing about ESG (other than snacks!)?

It’s changed over the years. There have been times when it’s that time in Room 8 before the first presentation when the kids are are getting their notes and there’s all that energy. At other times my favourite part has been when the children serve communion at the end. I’ve often been very moved by that.

What has been your favourite ESG performance?

Jacob’s Ladder, when two kids were hip hop dancing/wrestling. Gilbert and Oliver portrayed Jacob and Esau as the twins fighting to get out of the womb, hip hop dancing/battling to get out first.

If you could play any fictional character, who would you choose and why?

Gandalf. He has a lot of power, but there are just some really wise things he says in the journey. He GETS the journey.

Acting – I just like acting!

What has been your favourite ESG performance?

When the birds came down the aisle and down the steps. Someone said something really funny. [Family Tree, 2018 Immersive fall performance]

If you could play any fictional character, who would you choose and why?

A horse named Sasha who finds out she can fly.

This week we spoke with: Jemma

How long have you been involved in ESG?

Eight years!

What’s your favourite thing about ESG (other than snacks!)?

It’s all chaotic, and then everything just fits into place. It’s just really amazing to see it all come together like that.

What has been your favourite ESG performance?

Sampson and Delilah. They tied it into the pipeline story that was happening at the time. It was such a powerful performance. I’m just remembering being so impressed (and I was only 8 at the time!)

If you could play any fictional character, who would you choose and why?

Jo, from Little Women. She’s everything that I want to be. She had a progressive mindset for her time, an amazing strong woman in a time when women did not have a lot of power.

This week we spoke with: Gilbert

How long have you been involved in ESG?

11 years I think?!

What’s your favourite thing about ESG (other than snacks!)?

How you get to see something you worked on come to fruition. There’s a really cool product at the end of what you’ve done.

What has been your favourite ESG performance?

It’s a toss up between This Changes Everything and the Kingdom Beat. Both are Jesus stories, told differently. Kingdom Beat (which was 2016 or earlier) because it was based on slam poetry and set on Commercial Dr. It was told so well, it sticks in my mind. It had a cool vision of how it was depicted, and it engaged all of the kids really well. This Changes Everything just looked really good and I really liked the script.

If you could play any fictional character, who would you choose and why?

A character I’ve really always wanted to play was MacBeth. It’s just a really interesting role and I really enjoy Shakespeare
